2017 Freycinet Vineyard Riesling

Freycinet Vineyards

Tasmania is rightly considered by many to produce some of Australia's best Chardonnay and Pinot Noirs, and while its Sparkling Credentials are unquestionable (using the same varieties), it's capacity with Riesling is no less impressive.  Brands such as Pooley Wines and Stargazer can be found on some of the country's top wine lists, alongside the wine I'm featuring today.

Freycinet Vineyard, established in 1979, produces Rieslings that are always good, and often sensational.  The 2017 has only very recently been released.

Pale straw, with the green tinge of quality young Australian Riesling.

Citrus fruits - more in the mandarin than lemon spectrum - meld with white flower aromatics.  It is youthful and expressive.

The true detail and energy of this wine unfurls on the palate.  Essence of lime drives straight through and tapers into rapier-like green apple acidity.  It's length is immense.  It is vivacious and classy at once.

There is no doubt this wine will reward a long life in a cool, dry cellar.

Considering how recently this was bottled, and my belief that it will be even better in a couple of months, I can't think of a better wine to wash down Sydney Rock Oysters this XMAS.
